Au Pair Sample Family Letter Guidelines

Once you have submitted this form, we will start sending suitable families copies of your “Dear family letter”.

The letter is supposed to give the family a very good idea of who you are and therefore it is very important that you make the right impression in your letter. When writing it you should always remember that you are writing to a prospective employer. Take a little time and try to check the spelling and punctuation very carefully. If it is thoughtlessly done families may feel that that reflects your attitude to helping them. Families usually have an au-pair because the parents work, are busy and need help to take the children to and from school and stay with them until the evenings. Sometimes they might want to leave you in charge of the children and house and have complete confidence in your abilities to cope with anything that might happen. Because of this they will want an au-pair who is responsible and mature. Usually for families the most important thing is the au-pairs relationship with the children. They look for someone who already has childcare experience, loves being with children and likes working with them but at the same time can be firm with them when necessary. They also want an au-pair who is happy to do some lighter housework.

You should start you letter with “Dear family”. Write about your family background (i.e. Occupations of parents, brothers and sisters), say something about the area you live in, population etc. Give details of schooling and in particular any subjects concerning childcare, cooking and housekeeping. If you have worked with children previously give details of the children’s ages, the activities done with the children and other responsibilities associated with the position. Then say something about yourself. Give details of your interests and hobbies and also say something about your personality-but remember you are writing to a future employer so be both positive and honest. You should always say why you want to come to the host country and what you hope to do in the future. The letter should be at least one page long.

Dear Family,

First let me introduce myself. My name is Rula and I am 21. I study English at University. We live in a small town called Buchlovice, which is in a beautiful part of South Moravia in the Czech Republic. I like all kinds of sports, play the guitar and also take part in local amateur theatre.

I have a brother Petr (8) and a sister Lucie (4). Both are very cheerful and full of energy. I usually look after them after school and at the weekends. My mother Lenka (44) is a doctor and my father Tomas (49) is an Engineer. We spend a lot of our spare time together, going on trips and doing other leisure activities. We also have a dog called Benji who is part of the family, and a very good friend to all of us.

I regularly help my mother with the cooking and housework, and looking after our large garden in which we grow all of the vegetables for our family. During my holidays I usually work in a nursery school near our town. I help to look after children between the ages of 2 and 5. I really enjoy this job, because I love looking after children.

I have decided to be an au pair in Great Britain because I hope it can help improve my English, and my career, as I want to be a teacher when I leave university. I would also like to meet new friends, get to know England and its culture and be more responsible and independent. I think this is the ideal way because I like children and I am used to looking after them.

I am looking forward to learning all about your country and I would like to become a part of your family.

Kindest Regards

Rula Novakova
